An Iron-Age Hillfort On Your Doorstep!
If you are visiting Gors-lŵyd then a walk up to Tre’r Ceiri hillfort will be on your list of things to do! Tre’r Ceiri is listed as one of the best preserved Iron-Age hillforts in Europe – and it is only a short walk away from the cottage.
When excavation works were carried out, it was found that the hillfort was built during the late Iron Age. The second outer walls were built later, during the Roman occupation, in fact most of the excavated finds date to Roman times. Axes, bone combs, buckles and many domestic items have been found.
The hillfort still contains the remains of approximatley 150 stone huts and these were occupied by around 400-500 people!
The walk from the cottage is fairly easy and at a gentle pace takes about 45minutes. The views along the way are fantastic – there are views over to the bays of Nefyn and Morfa Nefyn (Porthdinllaen), then over to Anglesey, Snowdonia and as far as Cardigan Bay.
So why not take a stroll up to Tre’r Ceiri and enjoy a slice of Roman-Welsh history!!
