Boduan hosts the National Eisteddfod 5-12 August 2023
Have you heard that Boduan is hosting this year’s National Eisteddfod? Boduan is a village just 10 miles from Gors-lwyd. Boduan was meant to host the Eisteddfod in 2021, but due to Covid restrictions, the festival was cancelled – so this is the first National Eisteddfod in over two years.
What is the National Eisteddfod?
The National Eisteddfod is a travelling festival which celebrates all things Welsh; Welsh arts, language, culture, music, food and drink. It travels to a different part of Wales every year.
It’s actually a competitive event and the word Eisteddfod translates to “sitting”. This comes from the tradition of awarding hand carved chairs to the best musician and poet at the festival. This culminates in the “Crowning of the Bard” ceremony.
Awards for music, poetry, arts, language, readings, dance and many other performances are awarded throughout the festival.
Immerse yourself in the Welsh language as it surrounds you at an Eisteddfod. It’s a great opportunity to learn and practice a few Welsh phrases, even though you will enjoy the festival just as much if you are not a Welsh speaker.
There will be an opportunity to chat with friendly experts in the language. However, translation is available for the main Pavilion events and many of the other events around the site.
Welsh food and drink will be showcased in the street food area. There will be vegan food, burgers, pizza, and much more. A celebration of Welsh drinks too – welsh beer, cider, wine, gin and whisky.
Various stages will be at the festival – stages such as Y Babell Lên (literature), Theatr y Maes (theater productions), Tŷ Gwerin (folk music), Encore (opera and classical), and Llwyfan y Maes. You will be able to see over 60 of Wales’ best artists and bands.
Pentre Plant, is an area where children can be entertained. Tug of war, den building, and street theatre performances await, and the Science and Technology Pavilion is full of experiments, demonstrations, and games designed to take learning out of the classroom. In almost every tent, you can sit back and relax while your children are entertained.
Tickets for the National Eisteddfod will be released soon, so watch this space!
