At Llechwedd Slate Mountain, you can choose from; Llechwedd Deep Mine, Quarry Explorer and Slate Mountain Adventure. Two of these tours have an Early Bird offer:
Llechwedd Deep Mine
This tour is the classic deep mine tour. It takes you right into the belly of Llechwedd mountain – on the steepest cable railway in Britain. After arriving 30mins before you depart at 09:30am, you will be kitted up ready for your tour.
After descending 500ft on the cable railway, you enter a whole new world. Taken back in time some 160 years, with the aid of light projection and reality technology, you will meet the Llechwedd Slate Mountain owner as well as some of the people who worked under harsh and arduous conditions for up to 12 hours a day, 6 days a week.
Once underground, the tour lasts an hour and 15minutes. This is a walking tour and it does involve descending 61 well-lit steps.
A standard ticket for the Llechwedd Deep Mine Tour normally costs £20.00 per person, a Family Ticket (at least two paying adults) is £15.00 per person, but the Early Bird Tour at 09:30am costs £10.00 per person – a saving of up to 50%! You must arrive 30minutes before the Tour starts at 09:30am.
Slate Mountain Adventure
This is the ultimate tour of Llechwedd. It combines the Llechwedd Deep Mine tour and the Quarry Explorer tour, it also includes some little extras.
Starting with the Quarry Explorer, a 4×4 military truck takes you right to the top of Llechwedd Slate Mountain. Here you will see for yourself the sheer size of the quarry and also learn about how the Llechwedd Slate Mountain was shaped and developed throughout the years of slate excavation. From the summit 1400ft above sea level, you will see spectacular views across North Wales. This part of the tour lasts an hour and a half and ends with a hot chocolate in the café where you will be given a briefing of the next stage of the tour.
The next stage of the Slate Mountain Adventure takes you down into the mine. Here you will descend into the mine on the steepest cable railway in Britain. This stage of the tour is the Llechwedd Deep Mine tour and lasts an hour and 15minutes. It also includes a light show across the underground lake. As above, this walking tour includes 61 steps.
Your Slate Mountain Adventure is not over yet! Back on the surface you will be able to see a slate splitting demonstration by your guide.
A standard ticket for the Slate Mountain Adventure costs £30.00 per person, a Family Ticket (at least two paying adults) is £25.00 per person but the Early Bird tour at 10:00am costs £20.00 per person. You must arrive 30minutes before the Tour starts at 10:00am.
